"Never waste a good crisis"; said Winston Churchill. Covid-19 turns the world upside down, but this also offers opportunities. This adage and the matching section in the Dutch newspaper NRC inspired Purpose Lab to list a (freely accessible) list of visionaries and their essays. What opportunities are there to seize this pandemic to make a reset in order to make the industry and its impact more sustainable?


Lidewij Edelkoort: RESET

This trend predictor from Dutch soil was one of the first to say that the pandemic would lead to a global recession that would reset human values. The "quarantine of human consumption" would have a profound cultural and economic impact. Read here the interview on Dezeen with Lidewij that was published on 9 March.



Juval Noah Harari: humanity must make

Israeli historian, futurologist and author Juval Noah Harari published the essay "The world after coronavirus" in The Financial Times on March 20. The article stimulated discussion and policy. Harari argued that the corona crisis would be the biggest of this generation, focusing his contribution on long-term considerations and solutions: "This storm will pass. But the choices we make now could change our lives for years to come. Yes, the storm will pass, humankind will survive, most of us will still be alive - but we will inhabit a different world. " Read the article here. Harari is among others known for his books Sapiens and 21 lessons for the 21st century.



Andrew Evans: the coronavirus will change how we travel. That will probably be good for us

National Geographic's first digital nomad, Andrew Evans, published an essay on NBCNews' opinion section on April 19. He stated: "The coronavirus will change how we travel. That will probably be good for us." He believes the virus should be challenging to consider an industry that hurts local communities, wildlife and world heritage.
